To achieve happiness, they’ll have to find the courage to be their own men. As first mate in a charter fishing boat, Billy Ray meets a lot of people, but not one of them has made him as uncomfortable as Skippy—because he’s drawn to Skippy as surely as the moon pulls the tides, and he’s almost as powerless to resist. Billy Ray has spent his life denying who he is to avoid the wrath of his religious father, and he can’t allow anyone to see through his carefully built façade.
Skippy is only in town on business and will have to return to Boston once he’s through. But he doesn’t count on Billy Ray capturing his attention and touching his heart. After all, his father has certain expectations, and one of them is not him staying in Florida.
Billy Ray doesn’t realize just how much he and Skippy have in common, though. They’re both living to please their fathers instead of following their own dreams—a fact that becomes painfully obvious when they get to know each other and realize how much joy they’ve denied themselves. While they can’t change the past, they can begin a future together and make up for lost time—as long as they’re willing to face the consequences of charting their own course.

Skippy stood and wandered to the back of the boat while this was going on, looking toward the shore in the distance. He heard Billy Ray coming closer and stepped aside so he could drop the trap into the water. As Billy Ray leaned against the side of the boat, a larger wave than the gentle ones they’d been enjoying lurched the boat. The trap went into the water, and Skippy tipped toward the side of the boat, taking a single step. He would have been fine, but the boat rolled once again, further unbalancing him, and Skippy knew he was going to get wet at any second.
A strong arm caught his waist and pulled him back. The boat rocked hard once more, this time sending them both the other way, and they ended up on the deck in a heap, with Billy Ray on top of him.
“Are you okay?” Billy Ray asked as he practically jumped away. “You… you were about to fall overboard and I grabbed you and….” Somehow he’d turned even redder as he clambered to his feet.
“I’m okay….” Skippy got up, mentally checking himself over. Other than a few possible bruises, he was fine. “There was no harm done.” Except that, for a few seconds, Billy Ray’s hard body had been pressed to his, and damn, the man was a furnace. Even now Skippy’s body tingled. He brushed imaginary dirt off his clothes and let Billy Ray return to work, then sat with the others.
“That was some roll in the hay. How did you manage that?” Jerry asked under his breath, and Skippy elbowed him in the side. Sometimes he was such a hound dog. “Owww.” Jerry rubbed his side and thankfully kept his mouth shut.
